How Communities can be more Supportive of Addiction Recovery

Home > How Communities can be more Supportive of Addiction Recovery

Recovery from addiction is a collaborative effort. While individuals in recovery must make changes in their lives, having support from family, friends, and their community can make these transitions easier. In recognition of September being National Recovery Month, we’re taking a closer look at some of the ways that communities can support addiction recovery.

Host Sober Events

If you’re holding a get together – be it personal or for an organization – make it a sober one. This allows those in recovery, as well as people who prefer not to drink, to participate more comfortably and without pressure to drink. They can go and have a good time knowing they are in a substance-free environment.

Hire Individuals in Recovery

Transitioning back into the workforce can be difficult. People in recovery want to work hard, put their talents to use, and hold down a stable job. Sometimes they just need someone willing to overlook their past and give them a chance. Change is possible. Be the person who mentors, coaches, and trains individuals to maximize their potential and advance in their career.

Advocate for Treatment, Prevention, and Education Efforts

Whether you’re in recovery yourself or know someone in recovery, support efforts to raise awareness about addiction and get people the help they need. Whether you’re attending a recovery event, speaking about addiction prevention at a local school, or volunteering to raise funds for research, your participation makes a difference. Every little bit helps.

Northbound is proud to provide addiction treatment that equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to thrive in recovery, but clients still need support from the community. Addiction treatment at Northbound is just the beginning to a healthier, more fulfilling life in recovery.
