Joanna completed her Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Diego, and received her Bachelor’s from UCLA. Prior to coming to Northbound, Joanna worked at Phoenix House providing therapy to court-ordered adolescents and their families in English and Spanish. She is EMDR trained and specializes in treating both adults, adolescents and their families with co-occurring disorders. She has had experience working with abuse survivors, combat vets, and victims of gang violence. Joanna is in the process of obtaining her certification in TF-CBT (trauma focused cognitive behavior therapy). She believes in a post-modernist approach to the therapeutic relationship, and she strives to be transparent, compassionate, and grounded with her clients. She believes that people are resilient, strong and innately good, and her goal in therapy is to help them realize that for themselves. Currently, she lives in San Clemente with her husband Rene. She is a military wife and is very active in the military community and has volunteered at the Navy Medical Center with veterans, their families and wounded warriors.
