What Are Medical Detoxification Services?

Detox, short for detoxification, is the period during which the body of someone beginning addiction treatment is cleansed of chemical substances and toxins, returning to a state of physical health. Medical detoxification addresses the physical withdrawal symptoms of substance use through individualized interventions and 24/7 monitoring by qualified professionals. We include therapeutic sessions and assignments, so the focus is on the mind as well as the body. Detox also serves as preparation for the next phase of treatment.

We offer around-the-clock supervision and therapeutic services to make the experience as safe, comfortable, and motivating as possible for a premier drug and alcohol detox residents can rely on.

How Long Does the Detox Process Last?

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria is followed to guide the amount of time a person spends in our detox program.  The length of time varies depending on the severity and type of addiction; generally speaking, someone is usually detoxed within 5 to 7 days, with some cases needing more time. We have some people that are with us for a mere matter of days as well as those where we successfully uncover an underlying diagnosis, such as anxiety, depression, or other mental health disorder that leads to a more robust treatment plan to successfully treat drug and alcohol addiction.

Often, drug detox programs are only the beginning, and critical to sustained recovery, yet we recommend it not be utilized as a standalone treatment. The next phase of the recovery journey typically involves either Residential Treatment or an Outpatient Program to facilitate long-lasting recovery.

What to Expect During Drug and Alcohol Detox

During drug and alcohol detox, the body rids itself of toxins and begins to relearn how to function without their negative influence. Withdrawal symptoms may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Chills
  • Body aches
  • Insomnia
  • Tremors
  • Seizures

It’s no wonder so many people who attempt detox without support are unsuccessful. However, our compassionate and trained clinicians and care coordinators are there every minute to alleviate these symptoms. In Orange County, California, we also employ tried-and-true coping strategies, such as medication-assisted detox treatments, group and individual counseling, drug and alcohol education, 12-step meetings, and peer support.

Toward the end of detox and rehab, as the body is healing, the mind clears, and the soul becomes stronger. Cravings and withdrawal symptoms typically become less intense, and clients become equipped to face the next phase of their healing journey.

Why You Should Not Detox at Home

It can be tempting for individuals to go cold turkey and try the detox process at home. However, this can be a dangerous decision, as withdrawal symptoms range in severity from discomfort to deadly. Severe symptoms include delirium tremens (DTs), hallucinations, seizures, rapid heart rate, and even cardiac arrest. When detoxing at home, clients do not have access to immediate care, and their health is not being closely monitored. At Northbound’s medical detoxification services in Orange County, each person receives an individualized treatment plan that keeps them safe, and as comfortable as possible.

During the medically supervised detox process, skilled professionals assist the patient when going through substance abuse detoxification to ensure their safety and well-being during this difficult time. The patient will most likely experience flu-like symptoms and other undesirable side effects while detoxing. Because of these symptoms, most individuals that try detoxing from drugs or alcohol on their end the process with a relapse. When going through a detoxification program at a certified center, recovering addicts will be guided throughout the entire process and supervised by trained medical staff to ensure long-term recovery. In short, detox is an incredibly challenging and demoralizing road to face alone.
