Insurance policies are notorious for being difficult to understand. If you’re having trouble figuring out what your health insurance plan does or doesn’t cover, you’re not alone. Moreover, when you’re struggling with addiction, getting treatment is an urgent matter. This is why we at Northbound Treatment believe worrying about the cost of rehab should be the furthest thing from your mind and it shouldn’t prevent you from getting the care you need.

Northbound hopes to assist with all matters pertaining to health insurance coverage for addiction, and we’ll help you figure out a payment plan for treatment that works for you. Here’s a breakdown of MultiPlan insurance coverage for drug and alcohol rehab.

MultiPlan Insurance for Drug and Alcohol Treatment

MultiPlan is a PPO (preferred provider organization), meaning policyholders can get care from any in-network providers without a referral from their primary care doctor. The regional insurance company offers plans to people in living Wisconsin and throughout the Southwestern United States, but its networks include providers and facilities in all fifty states. MultiPlan covers residential and outpatient drug and alcohol treatment, and Northbound is a preferred provider.

If you need care for something other than a primary care doctor visit — such as surgery, psychiatric counseling, or substance abuse treatment — you can filter through the MultiPlan PPO network to find a provider in your area. Keep in mind that for a lot of people, residential rehabilitation centers aren’t always close to home. For this reason, many go to treatment centers in other parts of the U.S. Northbound also offers telehealth outpatient services to support those who need drug or alcohol addiction services but may not be located close to our physical locations.

Policy Coverage for Substance Abuse with MultiPlan

MultiPlan health insurance policies include coverage for substance abuse, but the level of coverage and which specific treatments are covered aren’t the same across the board. You can find out more about what’s covered under your current policy by contacting MultiPlan directly. We would then review the details of and let you know how much you can expect to pay in out-of-pocket costs, and help you determine your best course of action for starting your journey to recovery. If you’re able to log into your MultiPlan account online, you should be able to access details about what your policy covers in terms of substance abuse treatment. Their seasoned insurance specialists can help you navigate your plan, figure out your level of coverage. , verify which treatment options are available for you, and answer any specific questions you have about your benefits.

How Policies Work For Treatment Centers

Since MultiPlan covers substance abuse treatment, policyholders can seek care at drug and alcohol treatment centers. As we mentioned, Northbound is an in-network provider for MultiPlan, and we have multiple treatment centers in the Orange County region of Southern California. Just bear in mind that the extent to which your insurance will cover care at a treatment center depends on your specific policy. In many instances, insurance plans cover a specified number of days at a residential treatment center and a certain number of outpatient treatment sessions per year.

That being said, if your policy only covers a particular length of stay at a treatment facility, it doesn’t mean you can’t stay longer if you need more care. However, any portion of treatment that’s not covered by your insurance will be paid for out-of-pocket. Regardless of what your MultiPlan policy covers, Northbound Treatment strongly suggests you choose a program that suits your needs first and foremost.

Does It Need to Be In-Network?

As mentioned above, MultiPlan is a PPO insurance company, so you’ll get the best coverage if you select an in-network provider. However, MultiPlan also operates as a complementary network, meaning it gives policyholders the choice to see out-of-network providers. In other words, your policy most likely does provide some level of coverage for treatment centers and providers outside the network, but you’ll usually have to pay a bit more in out-of-pocket costs.

About MultiPlan Coverage for Detoxification

For many addicts, detoxification is a medically necessary first step to long-term sobriety. At Northbound, we strongly recommend that those who need to detox do so in a safe environment and under medical supervision. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 legally requires insurance companies to cover treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders. In 2014, the Affordable Care Act built on the law to guarantee more expansive coverage.

While coverage for substance abuse and mental health treatment is considered essential — meaning you don’t have to meet your deductible before your insurance kicks in — not all PPO plans cover detoxification. If your MultiPlan health insurance policy covers detox, you might be required to pay a deductible first. This means detox coverage won’t kick in until you’ve paid for a certain amount of healthcare service out-of-pocket. You may want to contact MultiPlan to ask them directly whether you’ve already reached your deductible this year or how close you are to meeting it.

MultiPlan Covers Inpatient Insurance

There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment approach to addiction. Some people can fully recover from outpatient treatment, while others may need the around-the-clock support of an inpatient treatment center. Your MultiPlan health insurance policy most likely includes coverage for inpatient rehab, but the length of stay depends on your individual plan. If you need help figuring out whether your policy allows residential treatment, please reach out to us at Northbound. We can verify coverage and tell you more about your options for treatment.

MultiPlan Coverage for Mental Health Treatment

Insurance companies are legally required to cover mental health and substance abuse treatment. Not only that, but mental health treatment is classified as an essential health care service. This includes treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, PTS (post-traumatic stress), OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), personality disorders, eating disorders, and bipolar disorder.

In many cases, mental health disorders coincide with substance abuse issues. This is referred to as co-occurring disorders or a dual diagnosis. Addressing psychological distress is a crucial component of overcoming addiction. Dual diagnosis treatment addresses both problems simultaneously. As with addiction treatment and detox, the level of coverage you’re eligible for depends on your MultiPlan policy and your PPO network.
