If you have found yourself on this page, that most likely means you or a loved one are struggling with an addiction. Substance use disorder is difficult, but the road to recovery has already been started because you are on this page. No step, no matter how small, should be overlooked; congratulations. However, insurance can be difficult to figure out. That is why we at Northbound Treatment want you to be the most up to date you can be on your policies. Along with this, we have an insurance team who are always available for your inquiries. Below you can find a general breakdown of Tricare’s coverage for substance use disorder treatment.
Insurance for Drug and Alcohol Treatment
TRICARE, formerly called the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services, is the healthcare program for uniformed military service members and their families, including retired members of the US Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, the Commission Core, the US Public Health Service, and the Commission Core of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. All beneficiaries are offered insurance coverage that can include:
- Health plans
- Prescriptions
- Special programs
- Dental plans
However, here we are talking about substance use disorder. This is still very prevalent around veterans, unfortunately. Luckily, Tricare coverage is specifically designed to help veterans and families.
Helping You Navigate Your Policy
Tricare differentiates itself from other insurance providers with their different levels or tiers. For the most part, what you see is what you get with Tricare. However, insurance is insurance, so it will still vary, and eligibility will define what kind of treatment you get.
Addiction Prevention Tools with Your Policy
For those who seek recovery, Tricare covers a large amount of treatment levels. Anything from controlling withdrawal symptoms through medication during detox, to continuing the levels of medication in treatment, plans from Tricare provide accessible and affordable treatment for the most part. As with all insurance plans, the different levels of coverage are subject to eligibility restrictions and other limitations. To take the first steps toward recovery, Tricare clients can explore the available coverage for drug and alcohol addiction treatment.
How Policies Work for Treatment Centers
Tricare follows the trend to cover treatment based on individual needs. For example, instead of giving you a flat rate based on a plan, your individual level of need will be assessed, and coverage will be determined given the results. For example, you will qualify for intensive outpatient rehab coverage (when the treatment goes to the patient, rather than vice-versa), if said patient is suffering from active addiction but does not need to be hospitalized. Essentially, if you are suffering from an addiction, but not to the point where you need constant medical supervision at a treatment facility.
Does it Need to be In-Network?
The terms in-network and out-of-network make distinctions between the facilities or treatment programs that are in or out of Tricare’s network. For the most part your treatment will need to be in-network, however, if patients enrolled in the TRICARE Select, Reserve Select, Retired Reserve, Young Adult Select and Prime Remote, then plans are permitted to use the out-of-network provider of their choice. If patients choose out-of-network care, however, they may have to file their own claims and pay a higher percentage of the service cost. Patients who select in-network will only have to pay a portion of treatment out of pocket, while the other option may require most, if not all out of pocket expenses.
About Coverage for Detoxification
Medical detox is often the very first step in the recovery process. It can be very difficult for the patient because this is the stage in which withdrawal effects are most experienced. Thus, it can be painful, and even dangerous. That is why it is so important for you to seek out a medical detox where your needs will be met. Along with this, there is a possibility depending on the severity of the severity of the addiction that medication to ease the effects can be administered. Luckily Tricare does provide coverage, so long as the patient enrolls in the approved inpatient or outpatient treatment.
Covers Inpatient Insurance
Likewise, to the outpatient treatment, Tricare covers inpatient insurance based on individual need. Should a patient exhibit signs or symptoms that require hospitalization or medical supervision, Tricare will cover the immediate needs and beyond. This also qualifies for those who seek out inpatient treatment. For the most part, should the patient require hospitalization or inpatient, it will have some form of coverage.
Costs and Services at Inpatient
Inpatient, hospitalization, or residential treatment is when the patient goes and stays overnight at a treatment facility or rehab center. This is usually for those who are unable to be on their own or need constant supervision.
Coverage for Mental Health Treatment
Mental health is also a topic that needs to be discussed involving health insurance. Mental illness on its own is debilitating enough. However, when an addiction co-occurs with a mental illness it becomes a co-occurring disorder. We want you to get your whole self, mind, and body, treated. It can be challenging, but it is best to know which options are available, and what is able to be treated with your Tricare insurance policy. Some of the following are examples of a mental health disorder.
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Bipolar Disorder
- Eating Disorders
