The strategy for treatment of substance abuse and mental health disorders at Northbound Treatment Services implemented by Medical Director Dr. Edward Kaufman continues to receive national recognition.
Northbound is proud to announce that Dr. Kaufman has been selected to the 2017-2018 Best Doctors in America List following the organization’s bi-annual polling of over 40,000 physicians nationwide. Dr. Kaufman has been distinguished in each of the last 13 reviews conducted for the Best Doctors list, which is audited and certified by Gallup.
The Best Doctors poll is a confidential review for all physicians listed in Best Doctors, Inc.’s expansive database. They answer the question, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer?” The organization then evaluates the results before ensuring all additional information meets inclusion criteria.

As medical understanding about assessment and management of co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders has soared, so too has notation of Dr. Kaufman’s work in the fields of psychology, family systems and psychopharmacology from throughout his 40 years of practice in psychiatry.
When Dr. Kaufman’s residency began at Columbia University in 1961, articulation of mental health’s impact on addiction was minimal. During the course of his remarkable medical journey since, he has served as president for the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the editor for the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse. He has authored three books, edited five more, and written over 200 articles and book chapters on family therapy, alcoholism, drug addiction, anxiety and depression. Dr. Kaufman was a full professor of psychiatry at the University of California, Irvine, where he served as Director of Psychiatric Education, Director of Family Therapy Training and Chemical Dependency Program Medical Director.

Dr. Kaufman’s latest work as an author, Tales of a Prison Psychiatrist: Fifty Years of Criminalization of the Mentally Ill and Addicted, was published in April by Gray Matters Consultants. The book covers the 50-year evolution of how mentally ill and addicted persons have been addressed institutionally in courts, government legislation, state hospitals, community mental health centers, jails, prisons, therapeutic communities, homeless shelters and private practices.
