Addiction is not a moral failing or lack of willpower
. It is a primary, progressive, chronic, and potentially fatal disease centered in the brain. Oftentimes it is impacted by mental health conditions, as well as, environmental factors. So not only is addiction a chronic disease, it’s one of the most complex and misunderstood diseases out there. Every person suffering from addiction has his or her own unique genetics and traumas and history. There is no easy fix, no magic pill.
There is, however, a solution: substance abuse treatment. Once a person enters Northbound’s drug and
alcohol treatment program, he or she will be surrounded by a passionate, caring group of doctors, therapists, and clinicians who tailor the drug rehabilitation program to his or her specific background and needs. This type of addiction treatment is successful; We know because we’ve helped lift people from the depths of their addiction through the stages of recovery to a life full of hope and joy. If you are looking for a reliable addiction recovery center, Northbound can help treat your addiction once and for all.
What is Addiction?
Addiction and substance abuse do not discriminate. They can affect anyone regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, profession, or age. The genesis of addiction is multifaceted and, at times, ambiguous. It occurs as a combination of genetics and social factors in varied and unpredictable patterns.
While initial drug or alcohol use is voluntary, once an addiction develops it changes how the brain functions. This goes much deeper than willpower. Many addicts want desperately to stop using but find themselves unable to do so despite their efforts. Soon enough, addiction becomes their lifestyle and a large part of their identity. That’s when many stop trying to cure their addiction.
Even in cases where the addict claims to have no desire to stop, alcohol and drug addiction rehab treatment is effective in identifying and addressing the root causes underpinning substance abuse and helping the addict change his or her behaviors. Ultimately, substance abuse treatment is effective in saving lives.
Addiction is a chronic disease that can be managed through a fully integrated treatment that concurrently addresses substance abuse and mental health. This type of addiction treatment is referred to in the field as “
dual diagnosis.” Quality alcohol and drug addiction treatment services involve a combination of therapy, education, life-skills development, family involvement, accountability, and continued support.
In order to prevent relapse, it’s essential that addicts are receiving proper care and guidance during the detoxification and recovery process. As one of the leading treatment providers in the area, Northbound uses evidence-based treatment techniques in all of our outpatient programs and residential treatment plans to ensure that our patients are receiving the best care possible.

Types of Addiction
Alcohol Addiction Help
More than 17 million adults in the United States struggle with alcohol abuse or alcoholism. It’s one of the trickiest forms of addiction because of the part alcohol plays in most social interactions. For many, even those who get drunk regularly, alcoholism will never develop. For many others, what begins as a fun and often socially acceptable behavior will become a destructive habit that feels nearly unbreakable. Furthermore, movies, television, and perhaps our own friends and family glorify the effects of drinking. They make light of the hangovers, the acts of inhibition that range from goofy to belligerent, and even the terrible decisions made when drunk.
Ceasing alcohol abuse is a delicate process; many people do not realize the medical issues that occur when detoxing from this substance (and, though legal, it is a substance). The individual needs professional substance treatment in one of our residential or outpatient programs in order to be successful in the long term. This starts with a medically-supervised detoxification process such as Northbound’s Alcohol Treatment Orange County Program, which ensures the health and safety of individuals during the initial stages of achieving abstinence from alcohol.

Benzodiazepine Addiction
Benzodiazepines, or “benzos,” are prescription sedatives. Although benzodiazepines are prescribed for their calming effect, they are highly addictive, and a person who abuses them faces a host of symptoms, including drowsiness and blurry vision. Due to the process of building tolerance, over time a person will require a higher volume of benzodiazepines to reach the familiar high. When the abuse stops, or the dose is cut down, withdrawal symptoms will emerge. Benzodiazepine withdrawal can be particularly dangerous and even life-threatening. Undergoing professional
medical detox at an addiction treatment center, such as Northbound is paramount.

Getting Off Heroin
Heroin is an illegal drug derived from the opium poppy plant and made from morphine. Heroin’s street names include dope, smack, horse, and junk, and it can appear as a white or brown powder or a sticky substance called black tar heroin. Heroin addiction is a rampant disease that claims thousands of lives every year. It’s only getting worse, as many people use heroin as a last-resort drug to feed their prescription painkiller addiction. The opioid epidemic has taken the United States by storm, and many people are dying from overdose every day. Though prescription painkiller addiction and abuse cases are currently much higher than heroin addiction cases, the numbers can shift easily due to the chemical similarity among the opiates.

Opiate Addiction Help
In the past, the term “opiate” was used to describe only substances naturally derived from the opium poppy plant, such as heroin, whereas the “opioid” label comprised synthetic and semi-synthetic drugs that are modified versions of these opiate building blocks, such as the medically prescribed OxyContin and Fentanyl—prescribed under brand names Duragesic, Actiq, and Fentora—and Fentanyl’s street drug, Carfentanil that is extra-deadly and widely available . In more recent years the terms opiate and opioid have been used interchangeably, with opioid being the more common blanket term that refers to all opiates, including those that are natural, synthetic, and semi-synthetic.

Addiction to Prescription Drugs
Aside from opioids such as OxyContin (see above), common prescriptions that become addictive include Vicodin, Morphine, and Valium. Some people obtain these prescriptions illegally while other people become addicted through no fault of their own; they take their pills like the doctor ordered, and then find that when it’s time to go off medication, that they are faced with withdrawal symptoms. In any case, addiction to prescription pills is as serious an addiction as any other and requires substance abuse treatment.

Opioids – Methadone, Suboxone, Naltrexone
The opioid problem in America is staggering, and it is getting worse every day. There’s no use sugarcoating this: Every day, more than 115 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids. How did we get to this point? In the late 1990s, doctors increased opioid prescriptions after pharmaceutical companies assured them the drugs were not addictive. By the time the ugly truth revealed itself, the country was in the full throes of widespread addiction. To say we as a country have an opioid public health crisis is a vast understatement.

Designer Drugs – Kratom, Spice, Ecstasy Abuse
Designer drugs are ones that enjoy popularity among teens and young adults. They proliferate at parties, lending a harmless-seeming high. The trouble with the latest batch is that they are entirely unregulated. Kratom, made from a tropical tree found in Southeast Asia, and often turned into tea, is sometimes mixed with other harmful substances, and has caused fatal overdoses.
Spice, also known as K2, is in a family of powerful drugs known as synthetic cannabinoids, or artificial marijuana. Spice is made up of plant leaves and stems laced with synthetic chemicals that claim to provide a high similar to that of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.
Unlike marijuana, Spice is known for giving users unpleasant highs, which can sometimes border on extreme and disturbing. It too can be mixed with harmful substances. Ecstasy, often cut with a stimulant, varies widely in its effects and its side effects; this unpredictability can end in an overdose.

Rehab for Marijuana
Similar to alcohol, some people can use marijuana legally without entering into an addiction, but for some people, marijuana use can become a slippery slope towards abuse and serve as a “gateway drug”. Like with any drug, over time a tolerance can build and cause dramatic changes in brain chemistry, making it more difficult to stop.
It’s an addiction when the person cannot stop using the drug even though it interferes with many aspects of his or her life. Their dependency means that quitting is more difficult than they might anticipate. After quitting they might experience withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability, mood and sleep difficulties, decreased appetite, cravings, restlessness, and physical discomfort. All of these symptoms act as deterrents to quitting the substance successfully, which is why addiction treatment is needed.
